Not every UK scholarship will suit you. Some need work experience, some are only for certain subjects, and some are only for specific countries. Finding scholarships that fit your profile saves time and increases your chances.
This guide shows you how to match UK scholarships to your needs, using four simple filters: level, subject, experience and funding needed.
Filter 1: Your Level of Study
- Undergraduate: mainly university scholarships and discounts.
- One-year master’s: the widest choice, including Chevening, Commonwealth and GREAT.
- PhD: Commonwealth PhD Scholarships, university studentships and research council funding.
Filter 2: Your Subject
GREAT Scholarships are offered in specific subjects at each university; check the list for your field on the British Council GREAT page. Commonwealth Scholarships focus on development themes.
Filter 3: Your Experience
| Your profile | Good fit |
|---|---|
| Fresh graduate, strong grades | University merit scholarships, GREAT |
| 2+ years’ work experience, leadership | Chevening |
| Working on development issues | Commonwealth Scholarships |
| Research background | PhD studentships |
See Chevening Bangladesh and the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission for eligibility.
Filter 4: How Much Funding You Need
- Full funding: Chevening, Commonwealth.
- Large partial: GREAT (£10,000), some university awards.
- Small partial: discounts and bursaries.
Build Your Shortlist
- Apply all four filters and list 5–10 scholarships.
- Note each one’s deadline and requirements in a spreadsheet.
- Group them by deadline and prepare documents once.
- Tailor each essay to the scholarship’s goals.
