Scholarships for First-Generation College Students: Where to Find Support

Scholarships for First Generation Students

A first-generation student is usually someone whose parents did not complete a four-year university degree. First-gen students often face extra challenges, from understanding applications to paying for college, and many scholarships and programmes exist specifically to help.

National Programmes in the US

  • QuestBridge National College Match: full four-year scholarships at partner colleges for high-achieving, low-income students, many of whom are first-gen.
  • Dell Scholars: $20,000 plus mentoring for Pell-eligible students from approved college-readiness programmes.
  • The Gates Scholarship: full cost of attendance for outstanding, Pell-eligible minority students.
  • Federal TRIO programmes, such as Upward Bound and Student Support Services, which provide guidance and support (check current availability).

University First-Gen Initiatives

Many universities run first-gen programmes with dedicated scholarships, mentoring and summer bridge programmes. College applications often ask about parents’ education partly to identify first-gen students for this support. See why colleges ask about parents’ education.

International First-Gen Students

Outside the US, some scholarships prioritise first-generation learners. For example, UBC’s International Impact Award gives priority to first-generation students. See UBC scholarships.

Tips for First-Gen Applicants

  • Tell your story: being first-gen shows determination.
  • Ask teachers and counsellors for help early.
  • Complete the FAFSA and CSS Profile where required.
  • Connect with first-gen student groups once you enrol.
