The University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver offers some of Canada’s most generous awards for international undergraduates through its International Scholars Program. These awards are need-based and can cover a large share of the cost of study.

The Four International Scholars Awards
- Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award: for students with outstanding grades and leadership that empowers others.
- Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award: for students from impoverished or war-torn areas who could not attend university without significant help.
- International Impact Award: for leaders working on issues such as sustainability, climate, social justice or health, with priority for first-generation students.
- Vantage One Excellence Award: for academically outstanding students entering through UBC Vantage College.
You are considered for all awards you qualify for through one application.
What the Awards Cover
Award values depend on financial need: the cost of tuition, fees and living expenses minus what you and your family can contribute. Awards can be renewed for up to three further years if you keep good grades, continue to show need and maintain your study permit.
Eligibility
- International student who will study in Canada on a study permit
- Starting a first undergraduate degree
- Superior academic achievement
- Demonstrated financial need
- Nomination by your school or an eligible non-profit organisation
2027 Deadlines
- 15 November 2026: International Scholars application
- 1 December 2026: UBC admission application
Other UBC Funding
UBC also offers merit-based entrance scholarships for international students, and is a partner in the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program for students from Africa. Graduate students should check their department and the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for funding.
