Canada is a popular study destination thanks to its high-quality universities, welcoming communities and post-study work options. Tuition for international students is high, but a number of major scholarships, especially at leading universities, can cover most or all of the cost.

Many other Canadian universities offer automatic entrance scholarships for international students with strong grades, as well as major awards with separate applications. Check each university’s international awards page.
Graduate Funding
- University funding packages: many research master’s and PhD students receive funding through teaching or research assistantships and university fellowships.
- Federal doctoral awards: the well-known Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship held its last competition in 2024. Doctoral awards from Canada’s three research councils have been combined into the Canada Graduate Research Scholarship – Doctoral (CGRS-D). Check the CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC websites for current eligibility, including for international students.
- Postdoctoral fellowships such as the Banting Fellowships.
How to Improve Your Chances
- Start in the summer before your final year of school: major awards close in October and November.
- Talk to your school counsellor early about nominations.
- Show leadership and community impact, not just grades.
- For graduate study, contact potential supervisors about funding.
- Beware of agents promising guaranteed scholarships; official programmes never charge fees.
