African American women can access a wide range of grants and scholarships, from federal aid to awards from organisations dedicated to supporting Black students and women in education. Here is where to look.

Start With Federal and State Grants
Complete the FAFSA to be considered for the Pell Grant and other federal and state aid. Grants do not need to be repaid.
Scholarship Sources
- UNCF (United Negro College Fund): manages many scholarships for students, especially at member HBCUs.
- HBCU institutional scholarships: historically Black colleges and universities offer their own merit and need-based awards.
- The Gates Scholarship and Dell Scholars for high-achieving students with financial need.
- Women-focused awards: such as the Jeannette Rankin Foundation (for low-income women 35+) and AAUW fellowships for graduate study.
- Sororities and professional associations: many Black Greek-letter organisations and professional groups fund scholarships.
- STEM programmes: organisations such as the Society of Women Engineers and the National Society of Black Engineers offer scholarships.
Graduate Funding
Graduate students should look at university fellowships, research and teaching assistantships, and fellowships from foundations and professional bodies in their field.
