The Azar-Hagen Series
| Book | Level |
|---|---|
| Basic English Grammar | Beginner to low-intermediate |
| Fundamentals of English Grammar | Intermediate |
| Understanding and Using English Grammar | Upper-intermediate to advanced |
What’s Inside
The book covers core grammar such as be and have, the present and past tenses, the future, nouns and pronouns, count and noncount nouns, articles, adjectives and adverbs, modal verbs, comparisons and simple questions.
How It Teaches
Each topic begins with a clear grammar chart showing the form and examples, followed by many exercises that move from controlled practice to speaking, listening and writing. Recent editions include online practice and audio.
Strengths
- Very clear charts that beginners can follow.
- Lots of practice for each point.
- Works well in classrooms and for self-study with the answer key.
Limitations
- Uses American English; British learners may notice differences.
- Some editions sell the answer key separately; check before buying.
Azar or Murphy?
Azar is built for classroom work with varied activities. Murphy’s Essential Grammar in Use uses a one-page explanation plus one-page exercise format that many self-learners prefer. Both are excellent; choose the style that suits you.
Verdict
A reliable, clear starting point for beginners. When you finish, move on to Fundamentals of English Grammar.
